2B Geiranger with Trollstigen Pass (Geiranger-Molde)

Welcome to the world's most untouched travel destination - Geiranger with Trollstigen Pass!

Experience the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord, a ferry ride across beautiful Norddalsfjorden, and an exciting drive down 11 hairpin turns on the famous Trollstigen (The Troll´s ladder) pass – all in one excursion. In addition, the Geirangerfjord has also been named as the world's most unspoiled travel destination by National Geographic.

We first drive from Geiranger, up the incredibly steep Ørneveien (Eagle Road), which tops out at 620 meters above sea level. At the summit is Ørnesvingen viewpoint and a waterfall. The vista here encompasses Geiranger, Geirangerfjord, with its sheer mountainsides plunging into the sea, and the “Seven Sisters” waterfalls. We then drive along Eidsvatnet lake and proceed to Eidsdal, where we ferry across the fjord to Linge.

Back on dry land, we head again for the mountains, stopping en route at the impressive Gudbrandsjuvet (Gudbrands Gorge). We then drive down Trollstigen (The Troll’s Ladder), a 66-mile-long stretch of road with dizzying views of abrupt mountainsides, precipitous waterfalls, deep fjords and fertile valleys. Trollstigen descends out of the mountains on 11 hairpin turns at a 9 percent gradient and is surrounded by lofty peaks appropriately dubbed Kongen (the King), Dronningen (the Queen) and Bispen (the Bishop). At the bottom, it’s time for a hot drink and snack before continuing to the gentler terrain of Romsdalsfjord. We wrap up our day with dinner in the City of Roses, Molde, before embarking on our waiting Hurtigruten ship.

2C/2E Art Nouveau Walk (Ålesund)

Join us on a guided walking tour through Ålesund and discover both the overt and hidden charms of this lovely Norwegian coastal city.

Distinguished by numerous spires, towers and highly detailed ornamentation, Ålesund is renowned worldwide for its beautiful Art Nouveau architecture. This is due to a devastating fire in 1904 that burned a large part of the city to the ground. Afterwards, the entire town was rebuilt in the fashionable style of the time, Art Nouveau. Ålesund today is a partner in the Réseau Art Nouveau Network, a European web of cooperation created in 1999 for the study, protection and development of Art Nouveau.

Our tour includes a visit to Jugendstilsenteret, a museum and national center of Art Nouveau housed in a former pharmacy built in 1907. The museum features everything from modern multimedia presentations to original interiors, and provides a comprehensive insight into Art Nouveau history. Afterwards we stroll by the picturesque fishing port of Brosundet, Apotekertorget square with its iconic fisherman statue, and Ålesund´s attractive shopping street.

2D Atlanterhavsparken and Mount Aksla (Ålesund)

See what life is like under the sea and then get a bird´s eye view of the art nouveau city of Ålesund.

Before visiting Atlanterhavsparken, we move upwards to the top of Mount Aksla for a remarkable view of Ålesund, before returning to the quayside.Atlanterhavsparken is one of Northern Europe’s largest saltwater aquariums and an architectural gem, built into the coastal landscape. Large tanks provide unfiltered views of sea life along Norway´s Atlantic coastline. Enjoy close encounters with a colorful and exciting range of fish and fauna. The aquarium has a spectacular dive show in Norway’s largest aquarium tank, where you watch fish being hand-fed by the divers.

Also visit the open-air pool to meet the park´s resident penguins. You can also try feeding the catfish, and taste hot catfish cakes. Also learn about regional bird and marine life, and environmental protection.

2F A Taste of Norway (Urke, Hjørundfjord)

A beautiful fjord, narrow valleys, an ancient settlement, historic hotel and tiny village – join us for an unforgettable journey through amazing Norwegian nature.

Enjoy “a taste of Norway” and see places that have fascinated visitors for centuries. After arriving Hjørundfjord by sea, a tender boat takes you to the tiny village Urke. From here, we go by bus through what is considered Norway’s narrowest valley, Norangsdalen. Because of its shape and location, Norangsdalen is often closed during winter. In 1908 there was a large landslide that dammed a lake named Lyngstølvatnet and submerged an ancient settlement that you can see beneath the surface of the water.

We also visit the historic Hotel Union Øye, one of the most distinct hotels in all of Europe. Built in 1891, the hotel provides elegant comfort in magnificent natural surroundings and has been a favorite of European royalty, writers and lovers for generations. Enjoy local specialties and a drink here before we return to Urke and visit the local grocer or a pub. We guarantee a great experience in the midst of majestic scenery.

2G Mountain Hike in the Hjørundfjord

The Hjørundfjord is one of the most distinctive and magnificent fjords in Norway. Experience one of the wildest and most beautiful mountain regions in western Norway from above.

 

 

Highlights of the excursion

• Visit the local grocer and taste the local beer in Urke.

Join a spectacular mountain hike in the Hjørundfjord region. From the top is a panoramic view of steep mountain peaks rising directly from the fjords to heights reaching 5,000 ft above sea level. Even in the summer there is snow on the mountains and numerous small hanging glaciers. The hike starts on an old farm road and continues on a tractor path. It's a steep climb towards the top, and the last 1,600 ft you climb an old stone stairway.

At the top you are rewarded with an absolutely amazing view. If you follow a path farther up the hill, you can see the village of Sæbø on the other side of the fjord. At the top you can also visit an abandoned bear cave. Before descending, we take a coffee break in Leknes valley, overlooking the village Urke, the fjord and the beautiful mountains. We take the same farm road back down, and visit the local grocer before ending our excursion at Kaihuset Café. There you are served an ice-cold “Slogen” beer, named after the majestic mountain we see across the fjord.

Hiking shoes and warm, windproof clothing

Physical requirement: Level 4 – The excursion requires high physical activity over an extended period of time. The terrain is mostly uneven, slippery and steep. You must carry your own backpack and equipment. This excursion is not suitable for anyone with limited mobility.

Recommended equipment: Backpack with water bottle, extra clothing, camera and sunglasses. The guide will bring necessary safety equipment. Participants should be in good general health.

Duration: 2 hours and 45 minutes

2H Hike with a Visit to a Shieling (Urke, Hjørundfjord)

Join us for a pleasant hike up from the fjord through lovely meadows to a summer grazing site at Haukås where we learn about farming in the past and taste local delicacies.

• Hike in magnificent scenery

Come along on this delightful hike to a shepherd´s shelter where our welcoming hosts describe life on the farm in the old days. In the past, farms in the village were very small, so it was important to utilize outlying areas for summer grazing. Every year, the cows were moved to a meadow near the shelter where they grazed and were milked morning and evening.

The grazing meadow was so far from the village that it was necessary to build houses for the milk maidens. The old farmhouses at Haukås were restored in the 1990s, and are reminders of a bygone era. Our hosts demonstrate how to use some of the farm equipment, and you get to try carrying milk pails and churning butter. You also get time to explore the site on your own, and to taste the local delicacies. After the visit we follow the road on the other side of the valley, and stop at the local grocery store.

2J Hjørundfjorden, Geiranger and Ålesund

Explore the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord, see some of Norway’s most dramatic landscapes and enjoy a visit to the Art Nouveau city of Ålesund.

Highlights of the excursion

• Enjoy the view from Flydalsjuvet in Geiranger

In Hjørundfjord, we go ashore in the small village of Urke and travel by bus through the narrow Norangsdalen valley. Then we enjoy beautiful Geirangerfjord from a ferry, before travelling up into the mountains for breathtaking views at Flydalsjuvet viewpoint in Geiranger. Some of Norway’s most popular travel photos are taken here.

We continue up Eagle Road, the steepest stretch of road up the mountainside from Geiranger. We take the ferry from Eidsdal to Linge and continue to the village of Stordal where we stop for coffee and a snack. We end the day in Ålesund, a town best known for its beautiful Art Nouveau architecture. Here, we do some short sightseeing and admire the view from the town’s mountain, Aksla, before embarking on the ship.

2K Kayaking in Ålesund

Join us on a guided kayaking tour through the elegant city of Ålesund and hear colourful local stories, including why it is built in the Art Nouveau style.

See the Art Nouveau city from the water and hear more about the devastating fire that burned much of the town to the ground in 1904. Ålesund was rebuilt in the fashionable style of the time, Art Nouveau. Our excursion starts in the city centre where you are kitted out with all necessary gear and get a safety briefing. We stop several times during the trip to take photos. The tour leaders are certified kayak guides with great local knowledge – assuring you a great day on the water.
