What to look forward to

Your base during this Arctic adventure is Longyearbyen, Svalbard's main town. Here, only 1,350 km from the North Pole, you will experience the special silence of the polar nights where the 24-hour darkness is illuminated only by the moon and the stars – and hopefully by the Northern Lights. It is truly an unforgettable sight to see the snow-capped peaks and glittering snowy landscapes being lit up by the beautiful Northern Lights dancing across the sky.

During the day you have the opportunity to explore Longyearbyen. For example, you can visit Svalbard Church (where services are held on Sundays at 11 a.m.), visit Svalbard Brewery, explore a mine and learn about the mining history on the archipelago, or visit one of the two museums, the Svalbard Museum or the North Pole Expedition Museum, where you can learn more about Svalbard's geology, flora and everyday life on the archipelago. Although Svalbard only has approx. 2,400 inhabitants, you will find several clothing stores as well as restaurants and small cosy eateries around town.

Itinerary

Day 1 (Monday). Departure day

You'll fly out of Copenhagen early in the morning, and after a stopover in Oslo you'll arrive in Longyearbyen on Svalbard around midday. As there is no tour guide on this trip, you’ll do the whole journey on your own, from checking in at the airports to your stay on Svalbard.
After arriving on Svalbard, a driver will bring you from the airport to your hotel, after which you have the rest of the day at leisure to explore the town, e.g. with a visit to the Svalbard Museum located in the centre of town.

At 19:00h it's time for dinner where you'll be served a delicious 3-course meal.

Day 2 (Tuesday). Sightseeing tour and Northern Lights Evening

From 10:00h to 12:00h in the morning you'll go on the sightseeing tour "Longyearbyen in a Nutshell" with a local, English-speaking guide. This tour is the perfect way to get a feeling for the town, and on the tour the guide will tell you about the town's history and all of the main sights, giving you an exciting insight into the town. The tour will go near both local mines, the research centre, the church and the global seed vault, and there will be stops along the way for photo opportunities.

In the evening from 19:00h to 22:00h the Northern Lights will take centre stage during the Northern Lights Evening and dinner at Camp Barentz. In the darkness of the polar nights it is possible to see the Northern Lights over Svalbard 24 hours a day. The interaction between electrically charged particles flowing out of the Sun, solar winds and the Earth's atmosphere is what creates this amazing phenomenon, Aurora Borealis. The Northern Lights camp, Camp Barentz, is located approx. 10 km east of Longyearbyen, at the foot of the Gruve 7 mountain, and the camp's great location gives you the opportunity to experience the Northern Lights away from any light pollution. Because, the most important thing when trying to see the Northern Lights is for the surroundings to not be disturbed by artificial light. The bus stops slightly outside the camp and you are welcomed by our hosts who leads you the rest of the way. The hosts will be armed with rifles to protect you against polar bears. Inside in the warmth, you are welcomed with a lit fireplace, and hot food is served while the hosts offer lectures and pictures. The lectures will of course be about the Northern Lights. The excursion is with English-speaking guides.

Day 3 (Wednesday). A Walk in a Trapper's Footsteps

With the morning at leisure, you can go on an excursion of your choice, if you wish. See the excursion options in the activity calendar.

In the afternoon from 15:00h to 18:00h you are going on the excursion A Walk in a Trapper's Footsteps with an English-speaking guide. It is an easy-paced walk of 1-2 km, and as the walk does not require any significant physical exertion, everyone can participate. On the walk you will get an insight into the life of the trappers and hunters, the challenges that they faced and how it was to live alone in the tundra for days at a time. It was a life that gave the trappers a great understanding and love of the surrounding wilderness. Halfway, you will take a break at a lavvu where you can enjoy a snack or drink, take photos and, if you are lucky, experience the Northern Lights.

You'll finish off the day with a delicious 3-course dinner at 19:00h.

Day 4 (Thursday). Northern Lights Safari by Dog Sled (Extra – not included)

With the day at leisure, you have the possibility of going on an excursion in the morning and/or in the afternoon. We recommend that you complete your Arctic adventure by joining the popular excursion Northern Lights Safari by Dog Sled with English-speaking guide, which takes place in the afternoon from 14:00h to 18:00th. On the Northern Lights Safari by Dog Sled you'll experience the tranquillity of the Arctic combined with the keen dogs full of energy, and it's this setting that forms the basis for a fantastically authentic experience. You'll experience the snowy landscapes and how they reflect the light of the moon, the stars and, if you're lucky, the Northern Lights. In addition to the beautiful surroundings, it's a pleasure to work with the polar dogs. The guide will drive in front with two guests, and the rest will follow with two guests on each dog sled. You take turns driving the sled and sitting on it, meaning that the excursion requires an average level of physical fitness. Extra clothing for the excursion is available to borrow. Please note, that if there is not enough snow, the excursion will take place on sleds with wheels.

You'll finish off the day with a delicious 3-course dinner at 19:00h.

See which excursions are available in the activity calendar.

Day 5 (Friday). Return journey home
